Find the files CS2 wrote your settings into

Where the game keeps your settings, your binds and your video options, and how to make sure they are current before you touch them.

There is no recording of this one yet. The steps below are the whole of it — they are what the video would be showing.

  1. 01Make the game write them out firstOpen the console in CS2 and run host_writeconfig. The files on disk are whatever was saved last, which is not necessarily what you are playing with right now — a setting changed this session may only exist in memory until you quit.
  2. 02Open your userdata folderGo to Steam\userdata\<account id>\730\local\cfg\. The account id is the short SteamID3 number rather than the seventeen-digit one, and if there is only one folder inside userdata, that is yours.
  3. 03Take the three files that mattercs2_user_convars_0_slot0.vcfg holds your settings, cs2_user_keys_0_slot0.vcfg holds your binds, and cs2_machine_convars.vcfg holds the ones tied to this machine rather than to you. Everything else in that folder is the game's own bookkeeping.
  4. 04And cs2_video.txt, if you want your graphics settings tooResolution, refresh rate and the graphics ladder live in that one, in a different format, and none of it can be set from the console. The converter leaves it out for that reason; a saved config on this site will show it.
  5. 05Copy them somewhere else before you experimentThe game rewrites these on exit. A copy on the desktop costs nothing and is the difference between trying something and losing four years of settings.

The tool this uses

  • Convert — CS2 .vcfg files into autoexec.cfg, or cs2_video.txt into readable video settings
